Lighting is one of the easiest and most common ways to get introduced to home automation. There are a few variations in smart lighting. For this reason, it’s difficult to know which type is the best choice for your home. With this article, we’ll take a look at some of the main differences between smart bulbs and smart switches.

Lighting with Smart Bulbs
Smart bulbs are helpful in two main ways: convenience and security. With smart bulbs, use an app on your phone or voice commands to control the lighting in your home. However, the most important feature of smart bulbs is the ability to control them remotely. Turn your lights off and on to give the appearance that somebody is home, preventing break-ins when you’re away.

Smart bulbs work best in lamps or areas in the house where switches or wall-dimmers can’t be installed. Also, smart bulbs are great for homeowners looking to save electricity. Using efficient LED bulbs gives you up to 20,000 hours of use. Additionally, smart bulbs don’t require a smart hub or special fittings. This is why they’re a great option for home automation newbies. Keep in mind that smart bulbs don’t hold the same level of tech as “smarter” switches or plugs, but they are uncomplicated and affordable.

Lighting with Smart Switches
Requiring installation, smart switches give you flexibility without replacing all of the light bulbs in your home. There are a few different options for smart switches:

  • Wired Switches: Many homeowners looking for permanent and fully-integrated technology choose wired switches. Wired switches require C-lighting to be installed by a licensed electrician.
  • Wireless Switches: Wireless switches are increasing in popularity in the home automation world. Wireless switches are mounted on walls and don’t require any rewiring. For this reason, they’re a viable option for renters or people not interested in the work and expenses of installing new wires.
  • Dimmer Switches: Dimmer switches adjust the brightness of your lights in a quick and convenient way.

Considering smart bulbs and smart switches, it’s important to note that smart switches are the pricier options. This is due in part to installation costs. However, smart switches are compatible with any light bulb, giving you more flexibility with light quality and bulb shape, size or style.

From convenience to security, smart home lighting provides great benefits.  When considering smart bulbs and smart switches, think about the features you need, how much work you’re willing to go through and how much you’d like to pay.
