Choosing The Best Sound Masking System for Any Office
What is Sound Masking?
First, some definitions.
- White Noise: this type of sound has equal intensity across all audible frequencies. Think of white light – which contains all visible light at equal intensity – making the resulting color white to the human eye. White noise is the product of mathematically random noise across the entire audible spectrum, resulting in sounds like TV static. The noise is constant and can be grating at higher volumes.
- Pink Noise: similar to white noise, but much softer. Lower frequencies are amplified while higher frequencies are diminished, resulting in a much more soothing sound. Examples of Pink noise are: rustling leaves, heartbeats, waves crashing, and steady rainfall.
How Is It Installed and Tuned?
Sound Masking speaker solutions are installed above ceiling tiles, in the ceiling tiles, or with hanging pendants in exposed ceilings. Some spaces will have a hybrid installation with all of the above-mentioned options. There is a “head-end” where the speaker cables terminate, and the system is connected to the main processor or “brain”. Ideally, speaker installation takes place before the ceiling grid is installed and tiles are in place; however, they can be installed post-construction as well.
Each sound masking solution includes a detailed tune and balance to make sure you can take full advantage of the benefits of white noise injection regardless of the specific geometry and environmental variations in areas of the facility. This tuning process is completed when the furniture and other office products are in place to make sure the process is tuned in a representative environment.
Why Does It Matter?
Hard surfaces, open ceilings, and innovative architectural layouts make for a modern workspace, but can really amplify distracting noises. Properly tuned sound masking equipment can de-localize a sound source, making the environment less noisy overall. This means conversations between your coworkers don’t travel as far, the meeting down the hall isn’t audible to everyone in the building, and phone conversations are more private.
