Don’t be fooled! Learn how to spot a scam. This April 1, we’d like to raise awareness of the tactics cybercriminals use to fool people into sharing their personal information.

We live in a digital age, and as the tempo of everything we do increases, scammers have become more sophisticated in their methods, preying on unsuspecting individuals through emails, texts, phone calls, and even social media platforms. Scammers will often immitate the look and feel of a real company or government agency to create the appearance of legitimacy.

However, consumers can learn how to spot a scammer before falling victim to their schemes. In this post, we’ll focus on identifying the red flags so you can better protect yourself and your loved ones from emotional stress, financial and data loss.

Below are three common and highly successful scams that are still circulating today.

Learn How to Spot These Three Common Scams

1. IRS Tax Season Scams

Criminals know it’s tax season and they use this annual event to harvest people’s personal information. If you receive a call, text or email demanding immediate payment for taxes owed or risk penalties and prison time, it’s a scam. This heavy-handed approach is intended to confuse you and get you to act quickly out of fear.

Never provide your credit card or banking information if asked. Never click on contact links or call the number provided in the email. These links and numbers often take you to fake sources, and may even contain viruses to further exploit your personal information.

Taxes are a serious matter, but the IRS will never pressure you this way. If you have questions about your return, visit IRS.gov online or contact the agency direct.

2. “You Won!” Scams

Free gifts, prizes and lottery scams are still alive and well in 2024. In these types of scams, cybercriminals will claim you’ve won a major prize, with the caveat that you need to share your personal information in order to collect your prize.

Be warry if someone requests your credit card or banking information in order to process prize winnings. Once a criminal has this information, they will use it to access your financial accounts.

3. Emergency Scams

Emergency scams come in many forms, including fake charities, free tech support plans, identity theft protection downloads, or various emergency scenarios that require an immediate wire transfer or credit card number to address a crisis.

Scammers know these emotionally-manipulative scams are especially successful and use it to their advantage to pressure you into making an emotional decision.

If you suspect a real emergency could exist, hang up on the scammer, call the individual directly to check on their wellbeing or dial 911.

How Do I Know If I’m Talking to a Scammer?

As criminals become more sophisticated, it can get harder to discern a threat from a legitimate contact.  So how can you tell if you’re talking to a scammer? There are some tell-tale signs that will make it easier to spot suspicious activity and to protect your personal information.

  • Be cautious if someone pressures you to act quickly and grows increasingly more aggressive if you hesitate or ask questions.
  • Never click on suspicious links from an unknown email address and always verify sources independently.
  • If you receive a suspicious email, look closely for spelling or grammatical errors, unprofessional-looking logos and emails that appear to come from a personal account instead of an official company account. These are all signs of potential fraudulent activity.
  • Create strong passwords for your electronic devices and online accounts and never use the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Use multi-step authentication for an extra layer of protection when logging into your phone or other devices.

If you receive a suspicious communication – whether by phone, mail, email, or in person – you can also check the Federal Trade Commission for the latest Consumer Alerts. This free resource is a great way to stay current on the latest methods used by criminals. It also offers steps you can take to protect yourself.

In a world where technology continues to evolve and communication barriers diminish, the battle against scammers continues. However, by staying vigilant, questioning suspicious requests, and seeking verification when in doubt, we can safeguard our finances, personal information, and peace of mind. Remember, the best defense against scams is awareness, so let’s continue to educate ourselves and each other to facilitate a safer online community for all.
